چکیده

In a recent paper (8) I showed that in the sera of leprosy patients the diffusible calcium level is well within the generallyaccepted range of normal variation, regardless of the degree of advancement of the disease or the presence of lepra reaction. On the other hand, it was found that in the lepra reaction cases the values of the other constituents were abnormal. Out of 12 such cases examined the total calcium level was low in 7 (58%), the nondiffusible calcium and the albumin were low in 10 (83%), and the globulin was above normal in 9 (75%). The pertinent data are given later (Table 1 and Text-fig. 1). It was concluded in that study that the reduction in concentration of total serum calcium is not due directly to any disturbance in calcium metabolism, as is believed by other leprosy workers, but to the lowering of concentration of the proteinbound (nondiffusible) calcium, and that probably that change is merely a sequela of the upset in the protein component system which results in the inversion of the albumin: globulin ratio, i.e., a shifting of the albumin level to below normal and of the globulin level to above normal. In the present communication it is the purpose to show that in the McLean-Hastings equation we have the means of further explaining this situation, and also of revealing a factor which may be of importance to the problem of treating cases afflicted with lepra reaction.

A Note on the State of Calcium in High Protein Serum.

In the reported experiments of McLean and Hastings, their equation was found to be valid for predicting the calcium ion concentration from the total calcium and total protein when the sera contained 7.5 grams of protein per 100 cc. or less. It has recently been shown by Gutman and Gutman (3) that serum from cases of hyperglobulinemia had less total calcium than one would have expected, if the c...

Observations on the Relation between Ionized and Total Calcium in Normal and Abnormal Sera and Their Ultrafiltrates

The frog’s heart has been found to be a sensitive indicator of the concentration of calcium ions in protein-containing fluids (1). Using the values derived by this method, McLean and Hastings (2) have shown that the total calcium, calcium ions, (Gaff), and total protein of blood serum bear a relationship to one another which apparently follows the law of mass action. Assuming that each molecule...

The Effect of Alkalosis on the Relationship between Serum Calcium and Protexn in Vivo*

In the absence of definite experimental evidence, it has generally been assumed that the symptoms of tetany associated with increases in serum pH are due to a decrease in the concentration of ionic calcium. However, by means of the frog heart method, McLean and Hastings (1) were unable to demonstrate any significant change in calcium ions with change in pH. Because of the relatively narrow pH r...

High Level Expression of Recombinant Ribosomal Protein (L7/L12) from Brucella abortus and Its Reaction with Infected Human Sera

Brucellosis, caused by Brucella spp., is an important zoonotic disease that causes abortion and infertility in cattle and undulant fever in humans. Various studies have examined cell-free native and recombinant proteins as candidate protective antigens in animal models. Among Brucella immunogenes, antigen based on ribosomal preparation has been widely investigated. In this study, the immunogeni...

Expression of Recombinant Streptokinase from Streptococcus Pyogenes and Its Reaction with Infected Human and Murine Sera

Objective(s): Streptokinase (SKa) is an antigenic protein which is secreted by Streptococcus pyogenes. Streptokinase induces inflammation by complement activation, which may play a role in post infectious diseases. In the present study, recombinant streptokinase from S. pyogenes was produced and showed that recombinant SKa protein was recognized by infected human sera using Western blot analy...
